The touring exhibition entitled ‘Speaking to One Another: Personal Memories of the Past from Armenia and Turkey’ brought together narratives and memoirs collected during an oral history project undertaken in Turkey and Armenia. The exhibition organized by Diyarbakır Arts Center was on view in Diyarbakır from January 8 through 16, 2011. The exhibition first opened at Cezayir in Istanbul, within the scope of ‘Speaking To One Another’, a project coordinated by Anadolu Kültür, Hazarashen Armenian Center for Ethnological Studies, Armenian Actors Union and dvv international (the Institute for International Cooperation of German Adult Education Association), with the financial support of the German Foreign Office. ‘Speaking To One Another’ was launched in August 2009 as an oral history project to be implemented in three consecutive phases with the goal to contribute to the reconciliation process between Turkey and Armenia through adult education, intercultural exchange, and oral history research. The exhibition opened on January 8, 2011, at the Exhibition Hall of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality and was launched by an inaugural panel that took place with the participation of Dr. Leyla Neyzi, a professor at Sabancı University who is also one of the lead researchers of the project. Co-curated by Önder Özengi from Turkey and Taron Simonyan from Armenia, the exhibition consisted of text, audio, photograph, and video works. Following the launch in Istanbul and Diyarbakir, the exhibition then traveled to Antakya, Yerevan, Gyumri, Ijevan and Vanadzor. The touring exhibition was tailored to travel internationally during the third phase of the project, which lasted until February 2013. The exhibition -revised and curated by Carmen Beckenbach from Germany during this new phase- was on display in Tbilisi and Batumi (Georgia), Nicosia (Cyprus), Berlin (Germany) and Paris (France).
