Following one-year long joint work of Anadolu Kültür and Diyarbakır Arts Center, the ‘Home Sweet Home’ show directed by Emre Koyuncuoğlu was staged in Diyarbakır on October 17-18-19, 2003, in collaboration with KunstenFESTIVALdesArts. The preproduction period of ‘Home Sweet Home’ continued for a year in Diyarbakır and İstanbul. Following a workshop facilitated by Emre Koyuncuoğlu in Diyarbakır, the casting of the show, composed of all Diyarbakır-based performers, was completed. The project team also recorded videos and sounds in various places at different times throughout the preproduction period, so as to collect the necessary audio-visual material for the show. In the second phase of the project, a documentary film featuring all this preproduction work was screened first in Istanbul and then at International Contemporary Dance Meeting in Berlin. In the third phase, ‘Home Sweet Home’ premiered in the abandoned Surp Sarkis Church in the Sur district of Diyarbakır on October 17. Approximately 650 people watched the show in three days. The project brought together artists from different parts of Turkey and it manifested an original artistic style, which fused influences from both traditional and contemporary arts. On the other hand, by using Surp Sarkis Church as the venue for this show, the project aimed to demonstrate the possibility of reviving and repurposing abandoned historical buildings of the city, by transforming them into spaces of union and communion. Following its premiere in Diyarbakır, ‘Home Sweet Home’ was also staged at KunstenFESTIVALdesArts in Belgium.
