Diyarbakır Arts Center’s first exhibition of 2010 was Hüsamettin Bahçe’s ‘Syriacs of Tur Abdin’ photography exhibition, which took place January 26-February 28. Tur Abdin, geographically spans from Midyat, Ömerli, Savur and Nusaybin districts of Mardin; and districts of Hasankeyf in Batman and İdil in Şırnak provinces. Culturally, it also includes Gercüş ve Dargeçit districts of Mardin. Tur Abdin, considered sacred by Syriacs as the birthplace of monasticism that houses historical churches and monasteries, is still the region with the largest Syriac population in Turkey- despite the great emigration for years. Photographer Hüsamettin Bahçe, who previously worked with Koçer and Yazidi peoples, traveled from village to village for a year, to reflect the religious and ethnic cultures and daily lifestyles of Syriacs of Tur Abdin in his photographs featured in this exhibition. Approximately two hundred people, including representatives of the Syriac community, the Mayor of Metropolitan Municipality of Diyarbakır, Osman Baydemir, and representatives of many democratic mass organizations and culture and art institutions, attended the opening of the exhibition. The exhibition was accompanied by a panel titled ‘On Tur Abdin Syriacs’ with the participation of Şırnak University Philosophy of Religion Faculty Member Nesim Doru and Dicle University Anthropology Department Head Abdurrahim Özmen.
