Diyarbakır Arts Center hosted the photo exhibition ‘Planet Football’ January 28-February 18, 2005. The exhibition that toured 80 countries was designed by the Goethe Institute in collaboration with the prestigious French photo agency Magnum Photos, as an official contribution to the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany art and culture program. The selection featured football themed works by such famous photographers as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Abbas, Martin Parr and Susan Meiselas. ‘Planet Football’ highlighted the common language of football in different settings, whether it be a courtyard, a mosque, a refugee camp, or a stadium. The selected works demonstrated how football culture crosses boundaries of nationality, race and religion. In conjunction with the exhibition, a panel titled ‘Football and Identity’ with the participation of the well-known author and editor Tanıl Bora was held.
