Diyarbakır Arts Center, with the support of the Swedish Consulate, carried out the ‘Don’t Tell Us Fairy Tales!’ project that aims to build bridges between women from Trabzon and Diyarbakır through a theater performance September 2011 – March 2012. The project was designed in collaboration with director Dilek Güven, with the intention of fostering connections between people from two distant and distinct cities and developing new relationships and joint collaborations among them.

Within the scope of the project, inspired by Sevilay Saral’s play “Tales of Women”, sections from the well-known fairy tales questioning the gender roles attributed to women characters and pieces from the works of women writers were brought together by Dilek Güven, the introducer of the project idea and the director of the play. Women from Trabzon and Diyarbakır embarked on a theater workshop based on this play, which explored themes such as violence, loss, tradition and customs, rebellion, and silence, through their shared experience. The aim of the workshop was for the women to express themselves through theater, get to know each other, and collaborate in the production. Following the rehearsals with four female actors in each city starting September 2011, the team gathered in Diyarbakır in January 2012 for a week of joint workshop. The play was first performed in Diyarbakır January 27-28, 2012, followed by a performance in Trabzon January 30-31, 2012. The project culminated with a performance in Istanbul March 17-18, 2012. The play garnered significant interest from the audience and press in all three cities. After the project concluded, the Trabzon and Diyarbakır teams continued to perform the play separately in their own cities and regions.
