With the support of Anadolu Kültür and the British Council, Diyarbakır Arts Center held the exhibition ‘Where It Was Shall I Be’ in Mardin Kapı Keçi Burcu (Goat Bastion) September 24-October 7, 2005. Featuring photographs, videos and site-specific installations, the exhibition sought to utilize the uniting power of art and initiate dialogue between diverse artists. ‘Where It Was Shall I Be’ highlighted the contradiction between the official discourses of homogeneity and the everyday realities of urban life in Europe, where heterogeneity and hybridity are the living norms. Addressing issues of shifting national borders, translocal and transnational relations, the artists critically examined the meaning of Europe today, and focused on both the flows and the spaces of encounters in order to find alternative positions from which to look at Europe in different ways. Within the scope of the exhibition, Michalis Kokkoliadis facilitated a four-day workshop on ‘Time-based Media’ September 12-15, 2005. In conjunction with the exhibition, a panel titled ‘A Dialogue: Specificity of Space in Artistic Journey’ was also held on September 24, where exhibited artists addressed the issue of cultural transformation.
