Diyarbakır screening of Zarê (1926), one of the first and most important silent films of Armenian Cinema- and the first film with Kurdish representation- took place at Avrupa Film Theater on September 27 and 28, 2011. The screening was organized by Diyarbakır Arts Center, in cooperation with !fistanbul, National Archives of Armenia and Anadolu Kültür. The Director of London Kurdish Film Festival Mustafa Gündoğdu, who developed the Kurdish Films program for !fistanbul, presented the program. Harpist Tara Jaff’s live performance accompanied the screening of Zarê. The film was translated into Kurdish by Kawa Nemir for the occasion of its screening in Diyarbakır, and it was screened with bilingual subtitles, in Turkish and Kurdish. Directed by Hamo Beknazarian – one of the founding directors of Armenian Cinema- Zarê, is about a tragic love story from 1915 at a Yazidi village. In Diyarbakır, Zarê drew considerable interest. More than three hundred people attended the screenings, among whom were authors, artists, and representatives of local authorities and civil society from Diyarbakır and viewers from Batman and Mardin.
