Cities: Batman, Çanakkale, Diyarbakır, İzmir

‘BAK: Revealing the City through Memory’, co-implemented by Anadolu Kültür and Diyarbakır Arts Center, is designed as a cultural collaboration and collective artistic production program envisioned for the participation of the youth from different cities in Turkey. As part of the program, aimed at creating collaborative visual narratives with youth from Batman, Çanakkale, Diyarbakır, and Izmir by focusing on the collective memory of the cities, the young participants were able to explore diverse geographies and connect with each other. Through photography and video projects, they conveyed the stories from their respective cities.

The participants, selected through an open call for young individuals from Batman, Çanakkale, Diyarbakır, and Izmir with an interest in photography and video, convened in these cities for three training and workshop sessions throughout the project. During these sessions, the participants received training on photography and video documentation methods and the relationship between the city and memory, gained insight into each other’s hometowns, and participated in various activities. The resulting works from the workshops were showcased in Istanbul, Diyarbakır, Izmir, Batman, and Çanakkale as part of an exhibition and screening program.

The training programs within the project were developed in collaboration with the Geniş Açı Project Office (GAPO) and docİstanbul – Center for Documentary Studies, and the work produced was supervised by Berke Baş, Can Candan, Refik Akyüz, and Serdar Darendeliler. BAK 2012-2014 project was supported by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Open Society Foundation, the Consulate General of Sweden, and the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul.

They conducted one-on-one interviews in these three different neighborhoods of Diyarbakır to become acquainted with different aspects of the city, encountered stories from the past and present, and shared and discussed the audiovisual recordings they made during the subsequent workshops. As part of the program, the documentary ‘Black Gold, Golden Microphone’ (2009), directed by Metin Avdaç, was screened at a public film event at Diyarbakır Evi.
