The Secret Life of Stories: Visualizing Children’s Stories through Object Theatre

The Secret Life of Stories: Visualizing Children’s Stories through Object Theatre

The Secret Life of Stories: Visualizing Children’s Stories through Object Theatre is an international cultural and artistic project between Turkey and the Netherlands, which focused on telling stories with/to children through performance and visual arts. In the scope of the program audiences in Turkey were introduced with the exceptional work of renowned Dutch performance group TAMTAM Objektentheater through performances and workshops in Diyarbakır and Çanakkale. The performances are presented to children at the age of 6 to 14 as well as an interested adult group, and the workshops took place with the participation of volunteers, teachers and actors working in the children area. In Diyarbakır and Çanakkale, the performances reached approximately 450 spectators, and 30 participants attended the object theatre workshops led by Marije van der Sande and Gérard Schiphorst from TAMTAM Objektentheater. The workshops gave the participants the opportunity of working on object theatre methods based on experiences from their professional and daily lives while also contributing to their existing methodological approaches in the area of children studies.

Community arts has been another main focus in The Secret Life of Stories program. A presentation on Community Arts by Dutch artist Lies Kortenhorst from Arts&Projects Deventer, and a research study with artists on children stories was held in both cities with the participation of artists, NGO volunteers and arts students. By this way, the project explored various ways of storytelling through objects and visual media with creative methods, with a priority to combine cultural/artistic collaboration with social exchange. In her talk on Community Arts practices in the Netherlands, Lies Kortenhorst shared her over 20 years of knowledge and experience in this area with the audience by showing examples from different kinds of artistic work with the community. During the workshop on the topic, the participants focused on different forms and methods of incorporating visual arts in urban space and contributing to the daily lives of children. The project ended with evaluations on the workshops with young artists and NGO volunteers, and the project team and participant groups discussed suggestions for possible artistic collaborations in and between three cities.

The project is implemented between 2-6 December 2014 in Diyarbakır, and between 8-11 December 2014 in Çanakkale in cooperation with TAMTAM Objektentheater and Arts & Projects Deventer, coordinated by Diyarbakır Arts Center, and co-coordinated by DADA Studio for Joyful Ideas in Çanakkale. The Secret Life of Stories came to life with the cooperation of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality City Theatre and My Friend Biennale in Çanakkale, and supported by Performing Arts Fund NL, Deventer Municipality, CAL-XL, Çanakkale Municipality, Alternative Production Association, Turan Furniture House, Diyarbakır Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Staras Music.
