The Fire and The Wedding Video Exhibition

The Fire and The Wedding Video Exhibition

Agir û Dawet / The Fire and the Wedding videos by Artıkişler and Karahaber Video Collectives are essentially the visual record of the struggle of Kurdish villagers from Kotranıs in Colemêrg (Hakkâri) to maintain their livelihood and identity after they were displaced and forced to migrate by the state in 1994, settling in the suburban area Türközü in Ankara and earning their living by collecting waste paper at the city center.

Over the last decade, as different, darker facets of recycling; for instance that forced migration, discrimination against the Kurdish people is concealed behind the waste we litter on the street without so much as a second glance, became acknowledged, various videos and texts on this issue have been produced. Yet additionally, in the same period, there were also some people from Kotranıs who recorded their own experiences and expressed their testimonies via video themselves. The videos shot at the weddings, funerals, on the street, during the struggles and at home by videographers and paper scavengers create a visual memory, and document what has been experienced in this country's capital city's garbage as the projection of the Kurdish struggle for existence.

The exhibition takes place between 20 January-5 February 2013 at Sümerpark Amed Gallery and after the opening, a forum and a panel will be organized on forced migration.

In the panel, journalist İrfan Aktan, artist and scholar Pelin Tan, sociologist Ruken Ergüneş from Diyarbakır, video activists Oktay İnce and Alper Şen, Özge Çelikaslan from Koza Visual, scavenger activist Şanlıbey Alabay from Katık Magazine, scavenger wedding cameramen Emin Çelikok (Ankara), Selami Çelikok (Colemêrg) and wedding video editor Lokman Temel (Ankara) will share their testimonies and experiences. In the panel section, the social, political and financial aspects of forced migration will be discussed in the light of the these testimonies and experiences.

The Fire and The Wedding exhibition is recurated by Artıkişler and Karahaber Video Collectives after the first exhibition at Istanbul DEPO between 18 March-21 April 2012, and it is organized by Koza Visual with the collaboration of Diyarbakır Arts Center and Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality. The Diyarbakır exhibition is realized with a support by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and Anadolu Kültür.
